Throat Center

The Throat Center sits at the center of the bodygraph and acts as the gateway between inner energy and outer expression. It is the most connected center in the chart, linking to all other centers through various channels. Everything in Human Design ultimately seeks expression through the Throat — making it the hub of both communication and manifestation.

Function and Role

The Throat Center governs all forms of expression: speaking, writing, singing, and action. It transforms internal processes — thoughts from the Ajna, emotions from the Solar Plexus, willpower from the Heart, identity from the G Center — into something tangible. Without a connection to the Throat, a center's energy remains internal and unexpressed.

Defined vs. Undefined

A defined Throat Center means you have a consistent and reliable mode of expression. You tend to have a recognizable voice and a steady ability to communicate and act. An undefined Throat means your expression style varies — it adapts to the energy around you. The challenge for an undefined Throat is speaking or acting at the wrong time, often to gain attention or prove relevance.

The Not-Self Theme

The not-self theme of the undefined Throat is trying to attract attention through speech or action. People with an open Throat may talk too much, at the wrong time, or force themselves to act before they are invited or recognized. The wisdom is learning to wait for the right moment to speak and allowing expression to flow naturally.

Gates of the Throat Center

The Throat Center contains eleven gates — more than any other center — reflecting its role as the universal connector. These gates include Gate 62 (Detail), Gate 23 (Assimilation), Gate 56 (Stimulation), Gate 35 (Change), Gate 12 (Caution), Gate 45 (The Gatherer), Gate 33 (Retreat), Gate 8 (Contribution), Gate 31 (Leading), Gate 20 (The Now), and Gate 16 (Skills). Each gate carries a different flavor of expression.
