What is Human Design?

Human Design is a synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern science — combining the I Ching, astrology, Kabbalah, Hindu-Brahmin chakra system, and quantum physics into a single framework. Developed by Ra Uru Hu in 1987, it offers a detailed map of your energetic makeup, decision-making style, and life purpose.

Unlike personality tests that rely on self-report, Human Design uses the exact date, time, and place of your birth to calculate precise planetary positions. Two moments are used: your birth itself (the Personality — your conscious self) and a point approximately 88° of solar arc before birth (the Design — your unconscious, bodily self). Together they form the complete chart.

How to read your chart

Start with your Type — it tells you your fundamental energy strategy and how you are designed to engage with the world. There are five Types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Manifestor, Projector, and Reflector. Each has a unique Strategy (the correct way to initiate action) and a Signature (the feeling that confirms you are living in alignment).

Your Authority is your inner decision-making compass — the part of you that knows truth before the mind catches up. Your Profile (a two-number combination like 2/4 or 6/2) describes your role in life and how others tend to experience you. The Incarnation Cross is the overarching theme of your life purpose, formed by the four solar-arc gate positions.

Defined centers (coloured shapes in the bodygraph) are areas of consistent, reliable energy. Open centers (white shapes) are where you take in and amplify energy from those around you — they are sources of both vulnerability and wisdom when understood correctly.

How to use this calculator

Enter your birth date, time, and location. The more precise your birth time, the more accurate your chart — especially for the Design calculation and your Profile. If you don't know your exact birth time, use noon as a reasonable default; most core chart features (Type, Authority, major gates) will still be accurate.

What information do I need to calculate my Human Design chart?

What is Authority in Human Design?

Common authorities include Emotional (wait for clarity across emotional waves), Sacral (follow the gut yes/no response), Splenic (trust spontaneous in-the-moment instincts), Ego (decide based on what you truly want and can commit to), and Self-Projected (talk through decisions out loud to hear your own truth).
What is an Incarnation Cross?
The Incarnation Cross is the overarching theme of your life purpose. It is formed by four gate positions: the Personality Sun, Personality Earth, Design Sun, and Design Earth. There are 192 Incarnation Crosses in total, divided into Right Angle Crosses (personal destiny), Left Angle Crosses (transpersonal destiny), and Juxtaposition Crosses (fixed, singular path). The cross describes the broader context in which your design expresses itself.
What are defined and open centers?
A defined center (coloured in the bodygraph) has a consistent, fixed way of processing energy — it is reliable and forms a core part of your identity. An open center (white) takes in and amplifies energy from others and from transiting planets. Open centers are not weaknesses; they are sources of wisdom and flexibility when you are not identified with or conditioned by the energies passing through them.
What are channels and gates?
Gates are the 64 positions in the bodygraph corresponding to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Each gate sits on one end of a channel connecting two centers. When both gates of a channel are activated — by your Personality, Design, or a combination — the channel is defined and the two connected centers become defined. Defined channels represent consistent energies and themes in your life.
Is Human Design scientifically proven?
Human Design is not a scientifically validated system. It is a synthesis of metaphysical traditions and should be approached as a tool for self-reflection and exploration rather than as empirical science. Many people find it a valuable framework for understanding their nature and making decisions, but it is not a substitute for professional medical, psychological, or life-guidance services.
