Channels are the highways of energy in the Human Design bodygraph. There are 36 channels, each connecting two of the nine centers through a pair of gates. When both gates of a channel are activated in your chart, the channel is defined — creating a permanent, reliable stream of energy between those two centers.

What Are Channels in Human Design?
A channel consists of two gates that bridge two different centers. Each channel has a unique name and theme that describes the specific quality of life force that flows through it. Defined channels are the backbone of your energetic makeup — they represent the qualities and abilities that are always available to you.
How Channels Work
When both gates of a channel are activated, the two connected centers become defined (colored in). This creates a fixed energy flow that operates consistently throughout your life. You don't need to seek this energy or wait for the right conditions — it's always on. Channels also determine your Type, Authority, and Definition by shaping which centers are connected and how energy moves through your chart.
Full Channels vs. Half Channels
A full (defined) channel means both gates are activated — whether by Personality planets, Design planets, or a mix of both. A half channel means only one gate is active. Half channels create a magnetic pull toward people who carry the missing gate, completing the circuit when you're in their aura.
Why Channels Matter
Your defined channels are your most dependable energetic resources. They show what you can consistently rely on in yourself — your innate talents, drives, and ways of processing life. Channels also carry the circuitry theme (Individual, Collective, or Tribal), which adds another layer of meaning about how and with whom you share your energy.
How to Use Channel Knowledge
Identify your defined channels and read their descriptions. Notice how their themes already show up in your life. Your channels describe what you naturally do well and where your energy flows without effort. Understanding your channels helps you stop trying to force abilities that don't belong to your design and instead lean into what's genuinely yours.
