What Are Human Design Centers?

Centers are the geometric shapes in your bodygraph, each representing a specific type of energy or life function. They are connected to each other through channels and gates. Together, the nine Centers form the structural foundation of every Human Design chart, determining how energy flows through your system and how you experience different aspects of daily life.

Why Centers Matter

Your Centers reveal where your energy is consistent and where it fluctuates. A defined (colored) center operates reliably — it produces energy you can count on. An undefined (white) center is more open and receptive, absorbing and amplifying energy from the people and environment around you. This distinction drives much of how you behave, relate, and make decisions.

How Centers Work

Each center becomes defined when it is connected through a complete channel — a link between two activated gates. If a center has no complete channel running through it, it remains undefined. Your defined centers show your fixed traits and consistent energy. Your undefined centers show where you are flexible, impressionable, and capable of deep wisdom through lived experience.

How to Use Your Centers

Start by identifying which centers are defined and which are open in your chart. Notice the patterns: defined centers reflect your reliable strengths, while open centers point to areas where you absorb external influence. This awareness improves self-understanding, helps you navigate relationships, and supports better decision-making by showing where conditioning may be at play.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean if a center is defined?
A defined center (colored in your chart) means that energy flows through it consistently. It represents a fixed part of your nature — traits and energies you can rely on day to day. Defined centers are not influenced by other people in the same way open centers are.
What does an undefined center mean?
An undefined center (white in your chart) does not produce its own consistent energy. Instead, it takes in and amplifies energy from the people and environment around you. This makes it a place of openness, learning, and potential wisdom — but also vulnerability to conditioning.
How many centers are there in Human Design?
There are nine centers in the Human Design bodygraph. Each one corresponds to a different function — from pressure and inspiration at the top of the chart to instinct and drive at the bottom. The pattern of defined and undefined centers is unique to each person.
Can centers change over time?
No. Your defined and undefined centers are determined by your birth data and remain the same throughout your life. However, planetary transits can temporarily activate undefined centers, which is why you may feel different energies at different times.
How do centers affect relationships?
When two people interact, their charts overlay. One person’s defined center can activate another’s undefined center, creating a noticeable energetic dynamic. Understanding this helps explain attraction, tension, and compatibility patterns in relationships.
